What does it involve?
Neuromodulators cause paralysis of the muscles to which it is applied. In cases of blepharospasm, for example, the substance is applied to the muscles that cause forced and involuntary closure of the eyelid. The effect of the substance is temporary, requiring periodic application (every 3 to 6 months, depending on each case).
When is it carried out?
It is indicated for mild cases of exophthalmos or blepharospasm. Also in cases of dynamic or expression wrinkles, such as crow’s feet, forehead lines and lines between the eyebrows. It is also indicated for some mild cases of eyebrow ptosis (drooping or lower than normal eyebrows).
A comprehensive eye and eyelid examination must be performed.
Before the surgery
During the first few days after application of the substance, lubricants may need to be used to prevent dryness.
The procedure can be performed in the doctor’s surgery or in theatre by means of injection through a fine needle.
Although fairly rare, ptosis (eyelid drooping) can occur after application, which is resolved spontaneously after a few weeks. It is important to note that injectable does not change the shape of the eyes. Proper use produces a very natural effect, and side effects only occur occasionally.
