Cataracts and related disorders
Cataracts typically develop over time, due to ageing of the crystalline lenses that are just behind the pupils.
Cataracts are the leading cause of visual impairment worldwide (17 million cases of avoidable blindness caused by cataracts), making it the most frequently operated eye disease in developed countries.
Cataract surgery is the most common treatment, at around 400,000 operations per year in Spain. The procedure replaces an opaque lens with an artificial one when the disorder has affected the patient’s quality of life and independence. Hence, a specialist will determine the right time for surgery through communication with the patient.
