What does it involve?
These rings can be used for the treatment of corneal deformation caused by keratoconus. The procedure involves inserting rings between the layers of the corneal stroma to raise the cone that these patients have developed.
When is it carried out?
It is used in cases of keratoconus, in which compensation with contact lenses is no longer possible and the corneal thickness enables insertion.
Prior examination
Comprehensive eye examination and corneal topography.
Surgery
The surgery takes between 15 and 20 minutes. It is performed under topical anaesthesia and on an outpatient basis.
Before the surgery
The effect of the rings on the corneal deformation can take several months. Visual recovery is, therefore, normally slow.
Risks
There are no significant risks.

Nowadays, there are several techniques. The most popular for small refractive errors, such as myopia, hyperopia and astigmatism, is LASIK. In special cases there are other options available: phakic lenses, crystalline extraction, intracorneal lenses or intrastromal rings.
