Training

Specialisation

Retinal surgery and intraocular tumours. His areas of interest are vitreoretinal surgery with particular focus on eye surgery and macular hole. He is also an expert on the treatment of intraocular tumours, having developed brachytherapy techniques with ruthenium plates and transpupillary thermotherapy for the treatment of melanomas and choroidal haemangioma in Spain.

He has introduced to Europe new techniques for the surgical treatment of retinal vascular pathology. He has also been a pioneer in the surgical treatment of venous thrombosis and arterial embolisms, as well as the surgical resection of intraocular tumours.

Professional activities

Founder of GEMTO (Spanish Multi-Centre Ocular Trauma Study Group) in September 1992, Seville.

Organiser of the GEMTO National Conference in April 1993, Madrid.

Organiser of the international course on advances in the treatment of intraocular tumours, Barcelona, June 1995.

Head of the retina section in the Ophthalmology Department of Quinta de Salut de l’Aliança Hospital from 1988 to 1991.

Healthcare coordinator in the Ophthalmology Department of Catalonia General Hospital from 1988 to 1991.

Staff doctor in the Ophthalmology Department of Vall d’Hebrón University Hospital from 1991. Head of section in the Ophthalmology Department of Vall d’Hebrón University Hospital from April 1998. Coordinator of the Ophthalmology Department of the same hospital from July 1998. Head of the Ophthalmology Department from 2001.

Director of the Ophthalmology Biomedical Research Unit of Vall d’Hebrón University Hospital since 2007. Founding member of the Ocular Microsurgery Institute of Barcelona, where he practises as a vitreoretinal surgeon and is also coordinator of the ophthalmic oncology unit.

Teaching

Director of 21 doctoral theses, all rated Cum Laude, two of which were awarded prizes for best doctoral thesis by the Autonomous University of Barcelona. He became professor of Ophthalmology by a national selection process in May 2007. Professor of Ophthalmology by a public selection process, Autonomous University of Barcelona, on 8 January 2008.

Lecturer and founding member of ESASO (European School for Advanced Studies in Ophthalmology). He has been invited to speak at Duke University and Cleveland University in the US and Marburg University in Germany.

He has appeared at a total of 501 conferences: 212 international, 289 national. 48 in the US, 37 in France, 20 in Italy, 19 in Germany. He has made keynote speeches at universities in Hong Kong, Lugano and Tokyo.

Research

Director of the Ophthalmology Biomedical Research Unit of Vall d’Hebrón University Hospital, part of the National RETICS Network (Thematic Cooperative Health Research Networks). A research group recognised by the Biomedical Research Department of the Catalonian Regional Government.

Basic translational research in nanotechnology applied to ophthalmology, including gene modification projects in AMD and macular edema. New treatments in arterial and venous thrombosis, experimental uveitis, intraocular tumours. 33 research projects. Collaboration with CIBER (Biomedical Research Centre on the Net) in diabetes and nanotechnology.
