In this guide, we take you through the procedure for your first visit to the clinic, which can be a basic consultation or may include diagnostic tests.
- If you are arriving by car, you can park in the IMO’s car park.
- If you are arriving by taxi, tell the driver to enter the car park and drop you by the main entrance, where the lifts are located.
- The first 30 minutes of parking are free of charge, whether you are arriving by taxi or car.
- The main reception is located on the first floor. Here, you will be directed to the consultations reception or the surgical reception.
- When you arrive at the consultations reception desk, they will ask for your ID to record your data. You will also be asked to sign a document required by the Spanish Data Protection Act (LOPD).
- The receptionist will then ask you to wait in the main waiting room.
- Your details will be passed on to a member of the ophthalmology staff, who will come to the waiting room and call you to have some preliminary tests and examinations before you see the ophthalmologist.
In the consulting room
- Visits to our clinic include: medical history, visual acuity test, refraction correction (if necessary), intraocular pressure measurement, fundus examination and gonioscopy, if the specialist deems it appropriate.
- If your pupil needs to be dilated before seeing the ophthalmologist, a member of staff will apply eye drops between 20 minutes and 1 hour before your appointment.
- During this time, you will wait in one of the secondary waiting rooms, located behind the main waiting room, next to the consulting rooms.
- Then, whether or not your pupil has been dilated, we will take you to the corresponding ophthalmologist. In the consultation room, the specialist will decide if it is necessary to perform a test to determine your diagnosis.
- Before performing any test, you will be informed of the cost and you may decide whether to have it done on that day or not. If you do decide to have the test, you will spend up to an hour longer in the consulting room.
- After the test, you will return to see the doctor, who will explain your condition and provide you with a diagnosis.
- When you leave the consulting room, you will need to go to the cashier’s desk to pay for the consultation and tests.
- If you have come via a mutual society, you will still need to go to the cashier’s desk to show your card and give your details.
- If, following the consultation, you do not require surgery, but you would like a report, you can request one from the main reception. You will receive it within a few days by post, fax or email.
- If, following the consultation, you require information about a surgical procedure, you will need to go to the surgical admissions department, whose waiting area is part of the main waiting room, located at the back and to the right.
- Once here, you will be taken into an adjacent room and given information about possible dates and times for your surgical procedure. You will be given all of the necessary information to prepare for the operation, as well as price details and an informed consent form that you will need to fill in and return on the day of the operation, when you enter the operating theatre.
- Please respect the information that has been provided to you, since following these previous instructions is very important for good care of your eye health.
- If your pupil needs to be dilated, you will not be able to drive.
- If this is the first time you are visiting the IMO, please remember to bring any reports or test results that your ophthalmologist has given you.
