Pediatric eye diseases
Eye diseases or refractive errors may appear during childhood, especially during visual development (from birth to eight years of age). It is, therefore, of utmost importance that children are examined periodically by an ophthalmologist.
Amblyopia (lazy eye) is a paediatric eye disease that must be treated during childhood, as it cannot be corrected in adults. Other, less common disorders, such as eyelid ptosis and Peters anomaly, require early treatment by experts in order to obtain the best results.
Paediatric eye treatment
Eye diseases in children are treated through different kinds of operations, such as congenital cataract surgery or strabismus surgery, in order to prevent the disorders from becoming chronic in adulthood. Steps must be taken to correct vision in children of up to eight years of age in order to ensure correct development of their eyes and of the visual areas of their brains, as well as to avoid further problems in adulthood.
