What does it involve?

The eyelid margin turns inwards or twists towards the eyeball. The skin of the eyelid margin and the eyelashes rub against the cornea and the conjunctiva, causing irritation and redness. There are four main types of entropion: involutional, spastic, cicatricial and marginal.

What causes it?

It is usually caused by tissue relaxation due to aging, but can also occur as a result of paralysis of the facial nerve (Bell’s palsy), trauma, scarring and surgery.

How can it be prevented?

It cannot be prevented, but can be detected early and corrected.

The most common symptoms are:

  • Photophobia
  • Tearing
  • Sensation of a foreign body in the eye

Lesions to the cornea require urgent treatment to avoid ocular complications.

Detecting the cause of the entropion is essential to determining the surgical procedure to perform in order to correct it.
