IMO's specialist was appointed to the role by the board of EuCornea last September during the Society's most recent conference. The Society was founded in 2009 and brings together experts and researchers specialising in the cornea and ocular surface from around the world once a year. During the inaugural ceremony held in Milan, Dr Güell eagerly accepted his role as future President and praised his predecessor, Dr Dua, as someone doing "tireless and highly professional work".
In his new role, Dr Güell
will assume command of the organisation, whose main goal is to spread the highest knowledge of ophthalmology internationally, specifically in the field of cornea and ocular surface, with a view to promoting scientific research and providing a forum for the discussion and exchange of ideas for specialists in the area. “Thus, EuCornea does not just try to improve relations and collaboration between professionals, but also the link with the patient, facilitating a more precise and personalised standard of care", explains Dr Güell, one of the founding members of the entity, together with doctors François Malaceze, Vicenzo Sarnicola and Harminder Dua. According to IMO specialist, “by providing a specific space for deepening and growing an area with great potential, EuCornea broadens and complements the work of the members of ESCRS (European Society of Cataract & Refractive Surgeons)
”, a society that Dr Güell also presided over between 2008 and 2010, being the first Spanish person to do so.
