What does it involve?
The application of artificial tears and lubricating ointments helps to control the dryness and irritation suffered by dry eye patients. Most patients relieve their symptoms with appropriate artificial tear treatment.
When is it carried out?
It is carried out in cases where the patient is suffering from dry eye. When it is not possible to directly treat the cause of dry eye, artificial tears and lubricating ointments can help to control dryness and irritation. For patients with more severe forms of dry eye, replacement therapy with artificial tears is often insufficient, so other drugs have to be used.
Prior examination
A comprehensive eye examination.
Surgery
Surgery is not performed.
Precautions
Also useful, for some patients, is the option of retaining the patient’s lacrimal fluid by blocking the tear ducts and inserting a miniscule plug to prevent the rapid drainage of tears, thus helping to conserve moisture and protect the eye.
Risks
There are no known significant risks.
